Trip to the Cinema

On Tuesday March 18th, 17 enthusiastic students from Bishopstown Community School’s Book Club, combined their love for reading with a fun day out to Cork’s Arc Cinema, followed by a trip to Vibes and Scribes, an independent bookstore known for its varied selection of affordable books. The group were looking forward to watching the newly released Dog Man movie, as many of the students had read several of the Dog Man graphic novels written by Dav Pilkey.

The series has become popular among young readers. Known for its humour, engaging storylines, and relatable characters, the books have sparked the imaginations of children around the world. For Treat Your Shelf, it was the perfect way to bring the adventures of Dog Man to life on the big screen.

The colourful world and fun-filled plot of Dog Man was thoroughly enjoyed by all of the students, who were excited to see the entertaining characters brought to life. Watching the film together also made the trip a memorable bonding experience for the students.

After the movie, the group made their way to Vibes & Scribes, conveniently located a couple hundred metres down the road from the Arc Cinema. The store, renowned for its wide selection of books across all genres, provided the perfect atmosphere for young readers to explore various literary genres. As soon as they entered, the students were greeted by the friendly staff and enjoyed reading and discussing the books available with their peers.

The students took their time browsing the shelves, comparing books they had found, and chatting about their favourite authors and genres. The affordable price (many books were just five euro) meant some students could purchase books, ensuring they had a memorable token from the day.

Overall, the experience reinforced the importance of reading as a gateway to creativity and imagination, and it was encouraging to see the members of Treat Your Shelf engaged and eager to explore their love of books in both a digital and physical capacity. It was a reminder that books have the power to bring us together, promote creativity, and create lasting memories—whether through the pages of a book or the excitement of seeing a beloved story unfold on the big screen. Finally, empowering young people to proactively read equips them with crucial life skill, as Frederick Douglass once said “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free”.
